Macaroni Penguins--These four have just returned to South Georgia Island after spending the entire winter at sea in the Southern Ocean! Why are they called "macaroni"--because early whalers named them after "Yankees" who dressed fancy: They were "Italianate" and called "macaroni." Like these birds with their head feathers: "Yankee Doodle went to town, riding on a pony. Stuck a feather in his cap, and called it macaroni."
