Humpback whale--one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life, we spent an hour with a small group of feeding humpbacks in "Iceberg Alley" of the Antarctic Peninsula. We were in small zodiacs, and they came very close. Here, a whale sounds in the midst of a fantasy garden of surreal icebergs.

Hawaii Humpback Breaching

Off the West Coast of the Big Island, we found this mother Humpback Whale. In about an hour, she breached over and over again, and her calf breached as well--all together, about 25 times for the two of them. Spectacular!

This mother Humpback sheds water as she comes nearly completely out of the ocean. We think she was teaching her calf how to breach. The calf imitated her over and over.

The Longest Flippers

The mother Humpback Whale breaches backwards, showing her long and beautiful flippers. At about 15 feet long, Humpback Whale flippers are the longest in the world of any whale.

Tail Lob

The Humpback Whale Calf grew playful, splashing its tail in the sparkling sea--a "tail lob." What an hour with these two whales!
